Established in 1991, ELC Manchester Academy of English is the longest standing English language school in the city and renowned as a centre of excellence in teacher training. Situated right in the heart of the Manchester, one of the UK’s most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, this school provides an ideal location to study an English language course while exploring what life in a big, British city is all about.
A mere few minutes' walk from Piccadilly Train Station, and with excellent public transport links, the school has 22 well-equipped classrooms, as well as a self-access centre, where students can use computers and borrow resources from the DVD and book library. There is free access to wifi throughout the building and a student lounge with a TV, CD and DVD players.
At ELC we understand how important it is to have a safe, comfortable and welcoming place to stay during your time studying one of our courses. This is why we have dedicated staff in our centres who can help you arrange an accommodation option that suits you:
Student house
Stay in our student house with shared kitchen facilities and social spaces, offering independence as well as a real international experience with fellow students.
Homestay accommodation
Stay with a local family – living in a private home gives you even more contact with English speakers and a real insight into life in Manchester.
Student residence
We have several furnished, shared four-bedroom flats with fully equipped kitchens available within The University of Salford’s John Lester Court campus. Students will have their own private bedroom with a single bed, wardrobe, desk and chair, and will be able to join in campus life, including hall activities and the student gym.
General English
We can offer General English courses suitable for all levels and abilities, which focus on improving students’ vocabulary, pronunciation, speech, writing and confidence in English.
Cambridge Exams
Our Cambridge Examination courses will prepare you with the skills necessary for these globally recognised exam papers – reading, writing, use of English, listening and speaking.
IELTS
The Academic IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Examination is essential if you wish to study at a British University or College. The examination consists of four parts – speaking, listening, reading and writing. The ELC IELTS examination course will prepare you in all four areas.
TOEFL
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a test for students who wish to apply to an American or European educational institution. Many companies and organisations also require a TOEFL score to indicate your level of English. This course prepares you for the examination and also provides general training in study skills.
TOEIC
TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) is a test for students in certain countries who plan to study at university, or for professionals who require a TOEIC score to improve their career prospects. This course prepares you for the examination and also provides general training in study skills.
Business English
Our Business English courses concentrate on improving your English for use in a business environment. It’s ideal for those studying business or planning to work in a job that will require a good command of the English language.
Football Programmes
This exciting study option, run jointly with Manchester City Football Club, offers students General English alongside afternoon football classes and football / sport excursions.
Cultural Programmes
Our ‘English plus Excursions’ option gives students the opportunity to combine General English with a programme of daily cultural excursions around Manchester’s most famous sights.
English for Professionals
Our English for Professionals courses are targeted at business executives whose first language is not English. Working one-to-one with a tutor, or in a small group, this course is tailored to the students’ needs and designed to deliver accelerated progress.
CELTA
Our initial teacher training courses lead to the award of the internationally recognised Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). The certificate is an essential first step in a career teaching English to speakers of other languages and an essential minimum requirement for teachers in a British Council accredited school.

Delta
Delta (Cambridge Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) is a widely recognised qualification, which helps you build better teaching practice and can lead to greater rewards and more career opportunities.
